Frequently asked questions
Will Medicare pay for a foldable mobility scooter?
No, Medicare in Australia does not cover the cost of mobility scooters, including foldable models. Mobility scooters are not classified as “essential medical equipment” under the Essential Medical Equipment Payment (EMEP) program.
This means they aren’t eligible for direct Medicare rebates or subsidies. However, customers may still be able to access funding through:
- Home Care Packages (HCP) for older Australians
- NDIS for people under 65 with permanent disabilities
- Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) for eligible veterans
We recommend speaking with your care coordinator or occupational therapist to explore alternative funding options.
Can I get a mobility scooter through my aged care?
Yes, mobility scooters can be funded through your Home Care Package (HCP) if they’re deemed necessary for your independence and safety. Here’s how it works:
• Your aged care provider will arrange an assessment, usually by an occupational therapist.
• If approved, the cost of the scooter can be covered using your package funds.
• Higher-level packages (Level 3 or 4) offer more flexibility for equipment purchases.
• You may also be eligible for urgent equipment funding through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
Scooters like the Aspire Midi Deluxe or Pride Pathrider 10 are excellent options for aged care support.
Does the NDIS fund mobility scooters?
Yes, the NDIS does fund mobility scooters if they’re considered “reasonable and necessary” to help you achieve your goals around independence, community access, and daily living. To qualify:
• You must be an NDIS participant under 65 with a permanent disability.
• An occupational therapist must assess your needs and recommend a scooter.
• The scooter must be safe, durable, and suited to your environment, not recreational or luxury models.
Once approved, the NDIS can cover the full cost, including delivery and training. Scooters like the Pride Pathrider 150XL Turbo or Drive Medical Scout Sport meet NDIS standards for safety and functionality.
