FAQs About Aspire Mobility Scooters
Do I need a licence or registration to ride an Aspire mobility scooter in Australia?
Do I need a licence or registration to ride an Aspire mobility scooter in Australia?
No, you don't.
Mobility scooters are classified as pedestrian aids under Australian road rules, not motor vehicles, so there's no licence, registration, or road tax required.
That said, you do need a genuine mobility need to use one legally: they're designed for people who have difficulty walking, not as a shortcut for short trips.
In terms of where you can ride: footpaths, shopping centres, parks, and pedestrian areas are all fair game. You can ride on the road briefly if there's no footpath available, but scooters are meant for pedestrian spaces.
Speed limits cap at 10km/h, and walking pace is expected in busy areas.
How far can an Aspire mobility scooter travel on a single charge?
How far can an Aspire mobility scooter travel on a single charge?
It depends on the model. Compact and portable Aspire scooters like the Supalite are designed for shorter trips and typically cover around 15 to 20km on a charge.
Mid-size models like the Midi Premium and Midi Deluxe are built for longer outings and can travel up to 39 to 40km.
The heavy-duty XL model pushes that further again, up to 50km. Keep in mind that range is affected by user weight, terrain, hills, and battery condition, so real-world distance may vary. The exact range for each model is listed on the product page.
What's the difference between a portable and a full-size Aspire mobility scooter?
What's the difference between a portable and a full-size Aspire mobility scooter?
Portable or boot scooters, like the Aspire Supalite, are designed to disassemble into lighter pieces so they can be lifted into a car boot without too much effort. They're ideal if you travel a lot, need to take the scooter in and out of vehicles regularly, or want something compact for shopping trips and appointments.
Full-size mid and large scooters, like the Aspire Midi and XL range, are built for more regular outdoor use, longer distances, rougher terrain, and heavier users. They're more comfortable for extended rides but aren't designed to be pulled apart and packed into a car.
Think about how and where you'll use it most, and that'll point you to the right category.
Can I use NDIS funding to buy an Aspire mobility scooter?
Can I use NDIS funding to buy an Aspire mobility scooter?
Yes, if you're eligible. Mobility scooters are funded under the NDIS as assistive technology, provided the scooter links to your goals around mobility, independence, and community participation.
You'll generally need an assessment from an occupational therapist or physiotherapist for equipment over $1,500, which covers most scooters.
The process can take some time depending on your plan and the complexity of the request, so it's worth starting early.
Can I take an Aspire mobility scooter on a plane?
Can I take an Aspire mobility scooter on a plane?
It depends on the specific model and the airline.
Most standard full-size mobility scooters can't be taken in the cabin and would need to be checked as mobility equipment in the hold, and not all airlines accommodate them.
Compact travel scooters with airline-approved batteries are a better option if flying is part of your plans.
Before booking, it's worth contacting your airline directly to confirm their policies on mobility equipment, battery type, and watt-hour limits.
If air travel is a regular part of your life, mention that when you're choosing a scooter and we'll help you find a model that suits.
How do I choose the right Aspire mobility scooter for my needs?
How do I choose the right Aspire mobility scooter for my needs?
A few things to think through: where you'll be riding most (indoors, smooth footpaths, rougher outdoor terrain), how far you typically need to travel on a charge, whether you need to transport it in a car regularly, and your weight relative to the scooter's safe working load.
Compact models suit shorter trips and frequent transport; mid-size models are great all-rounders for outdoor use; and the XL is built for heavier users or those needing longer range.
