Riodine Antiseptic Solution 10% Povidone-Iodine 500ml

Composition:

Povidone-Iodine 10% (equivalent to 1% available Iodine) in a water miscible ointment base.

Actions:

Povidone-Iodine is an iodophore in which Iodine is bound to the carrier molecule, Povidone. The complex, Povidone-Iodine, slowly liberates inorganic Iodine when in contact with the skin and mucous membranes. As the active free Iodine is utilised by microbial challenge, more loosely bound

Iodine is released. Since only a small amount of Iodine is released at any one time, Povidone-Iodine has a lower irritant potential, and longer duration of microbicidal action than conventional Iodine containing products.

Povidone-Iodine has the antimicrobial spectrum of Iodine. It has broad spectrum activity; powerfully microbicidal to bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, cysts and spores.

Indications:

As a topical antiseptic to treat infection in cuts, minor burns, blisters, wounds and abrasions; minor infections of the nails; tinea and other fungal bacterial infections of the ski; impetigo (school sores), chicken pox, blisters and boils.

Directions for Use:

Apply using cotton bud, cotton wool or gauze as required. Sufficient ointment should be applied to maintain microbiocidal activity in the presence of blood, pus, serum or mucosal secretions. Treated areas may be bandaged. Colour outlines the treated area and activity so as the colour fades more ointment should be applied.

• Minor Burns: Where skin is reddened or unbroken, apply liberally to the affected area. Do not use on extensive burn areas.
• Blisters: For broken and unbroken blisters apply ointment liberally to the affected area.
• Chicken Pox Sores: Apply twice daily to the affected area until infection clears in order to minimise secondary infection and scarring.
• Boils: Cover the entire boil area twice a day until the infection clears.

Contraindications:

Known hypersensitivity to Iodine.

Precautions:

Avoid application to deep wounds and large areas of broken skin as excessive absorption of Iodine may occur.

Povidone-Iodine may have a prolonging effect on the wound healing process. Its use therefore should be restricted to infection control of wounds, rather than general wound management.

Warnings:

For external use only. If skin irritation or rash occurs, discontinue use and consult a doctor.

Use in Pregnancy:

Use should be restricted to a single application or over a small area for a short period. Although no adverse effects are anticipated from such limited usage, caution is recommended and the therapeutic benefit must be balanced against the possible effects of the absorption of Iodine on thyroid development and function.

Use in Children:

• Premature infants. Not recommended for use as an antiseptic ointment on premature newborn infants.
• Full term infants. The use of Povidone-Iodine containing preparations on full term infants may present a small risk of transient hypothyroidismespecially if applied to large areas of the body and/or for extended periodsof time (greater than five days). Repeated or large applications of Herron® Riodine® Antiseptic Ointment in full term infants should be used inconjunction with appropriate monitoring of thyroid function.

Adverse Effects:

Rare cases of sensitivity to Iodine have been reported. In the event that skin irritation and sensitivity occurs, discontinue use.
